Ten Things To Do This Weekend Instead of Spending Money

Topics:

We are constantly bombarded with advertisements encouraging us to spend money on the next thing that will make us happy or fulfilled – so much so that we often forget that many of the most enjoyable things in life are free!

If you are struggling with debt and are trying to limit your spending, it is especially important to find things to do that are enjoyable but free. Read on for ten things you can do this weekend instead of spending money.

1. Get Outside

Ditch the expensive gym membership, lace up your running shoes, and hit the trails. Whether you walk, run, or jog, getting some fresh air and Vitamin D will lift your spirits, get your blood pumping, and give you a healthy boost of endorphins – not to mention, it is easy on your wallet!

2. Give Back

Many of us spend money on things just to fill up our time. Instead of doing that, pick one day this weekend to fill up your time by volunteering in your community. There are numerous charities, churches, and causes that could use a helping hand. Not only will your wallet thank you, but you will also no doubt have brightened someone else’s day.

3. Host a Movie Marathon

We all love the movies, but between tickets, popcorn, and Junior Mint’s, a flick can cost us north of $30. Horde that cash and instead, plan a movie night in complete with homemade, healthy snacks and a pile of all-time favorite (and completely free) DVDs.

4. Break Out The Board Games

Invite a few people over for a game night. You probably already have a few games, puzzles or decks of cards lying around your house, but if not, ask your friends to bring their favorites. Hosting an old-school game night (Monopoly, anyone?) is a great way to reconnect with your inner child while making memories.

5. Get Crafty

Bust out your craft supplies and get to work! Even if all you have is some blank paper and colored markers, let your imagination run wild. In addition to being free, you get the bonus of the stress relief and calm that usually accompanies putting away technology and reconnecting to your artistic and creative side. There is a reason, after all, that adult coloring books are all the rage.

6. Hit The Library

If reading is your thing, nothing beats a day spent at the library, exploring a new topic, and choosing a few new books to take home. Even if reading is not your thing, the local library offers so much more, all for free. Aside from free music and movies that you can also rent, libraries usually offer free programs to the public. Check out your library’s website for a list of their events, which can range from craft activities for the kids to language lessons for teens and adults.

7. Browse a Museum

Spend the day at a free museum. Many museums charge “what you can afford,” meaning you are free to donate a small amount or nothing at all when you visit. Others have dedicated days of the month where they are free to the public. Check out the websites of some of the museums in your area and plan ahead of time when to visit which one. Be sure to pack snacks so you are not tempted to stop by the expensive museum cafeteria in order to keep it a no-spend day!

8. Play

Head to the best local park within a short drive of your house and spend the day there, playing like you used to do as a little kid. It is free to swing, smell the flowers, birdwatch, lie in the shade, read a book, and kick a soccer ball.

9. Enjoy Some Facetime – And not The iPhone Kind

Chances are in your busy life you’ve lost touch with some old friends. Give them a call and meet up for a walk, a cup of coffee, or an old-fashioned catchup session.

10. Dig through Your Pantry and Get Creative

No matter your cooking abilities (or lack thereof), challenge yourself to whip up a meal using only ingredients you already have. Beans? Wilted lettuce? Apples? Challenge accepted. If you are feeling adventurous, invite some friends over to join for your “mystery meal” evening (as a bonus, they might even come bearing gifts in the form of wine or dessert to accompany your meal!).

If you are struggling financially, consider reaching out to a reputable debt settlement company that can help you get back on your feet, preparing for a financially-free future.
